Study suggests massive black hole exists in the Sword of Orion
The famous Sword of Orion, located in the Orion Nebula (pictured), contains a cluster of unruly stars moving so rapidly that the Nebula would appear to be flying apart. Until now this phenomena has gone unexplained.
Researchers have found that the presence of a massive black hole could explain the strange behaviours of this star cluster. Using a computer model of the Orion Nebula, researchers demonstrated the formation of this black hole and the effects of its powerful gravitational pull on the surrounding stars. The gravitational pull of this immense astronomical body, 200 times stronger than the sun, is what makes these rapid star clusters possible.
The potential presence of a black hole in the Orion Nebula provides an opportunity to investigate these fascinating, celestial objects.
